The avenue de la Grande Armée connects Napoleon Bonaparte’s Arc de Triomphe and Mitterand’s La Grande Arche, an imposing, post-modern structure which presides over the international business district of La Défense, located on the western edge of Paris. This trajectory also marks the passage of Alain Avantil, the protagonist of L’ENTRETIEN, who journeys from the center of Paris to its outer reaches in search of a job. Like a magnet, the Grande Arche lures him into a Kafkaesque world of mistaken identity and mysterious encounters.
Shot on-location in Paris, France. In French, with English subtitles. Funded by the J. William Fulbright Association, the University of Iowa Graduate College, the State of Iowa Arts Council, and the University of Colorado at Boulder.
